Students for initiation in the  Degrees must fulfill the following requirements before their names may be presented to the Initiates' Council as candidates for initiation:

FIRST DEGREE

Educational and Mental Growth (Air) Requirements:

  • Accept and abide by coven bylaws
  • Complete the Dedicant curriculum and assignments. Attend at least 75% of all 1st level group classes.
  • Demonstrate your understanding of the material by actively participating in group discussions. Be prepared to take written and/or oral exams to demonstrate your knowledge.
  • Choose a subject which interests you and for which you wish to become a resource to the community. It should be a topic which you can expand upon in the future.. Research, write and present an introductory level class on your topic. This will be your first "specialization" which you will seek over time to master.
  • Become familiar with basic principles and techniques for counseling.

Magickal Growth and Will (Fire) Requirements:

  • Create your own Book of Shadows / Book of Light / Book of Questions and keep it current with notes and descriptions of classes, rituals and personal magickal workings. Present your BoS/BoL/BoQ to your mentor or teacher for polite critical evaluation when requested to do so.
  • Learn the meaning and magickal uses of the basic ritual tools: athame, wand, chalice and pentacle. Learn to do ritual both with tools and as unencumbered ritual.
  • Devise and then demonstrate an alternate method of invoking a ritual Circle, in the presence of another initiate and one other member of the Tradition.
  • Design and lead at least one one Full Moon Esbat and one Sabbat Ritual.
  • Choose a set of defined personal goals and begin working to achieve them. Document your progress in your personal magickal journal.
  • Begin to learn to blend your energy with the groups and to develop a Group Mind.
  • Write an original guided meditation, and facilitate that meditation in a group setting in the presence of another initiate.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with one form of divination ork at becoming skilled in this form.
  • Identify and begin working in an area of magical specialty in which you would like to do advanced study and development.

Group Dynamics and Emotional Growth (Water) Requirements:

  • Learn to take responsibility for your emotions and how you express and transform them. . Demonstrate your progress by meeting at least one self set goal aimed towards improving your overall social skills and psychological well being.
  • Actively associate with the other members of the grove by attending at least 75% of Cottage functions over a period of at least 1 year and a day and participate in one full Wheel of the Year of Sabbats (again, attending at least 75% of the Sabbat rituals or 6 of the 8 Sabbats). Attend open moon rituals and rites of passages when possible.
  • Establish and maintain warm, positive relationships with others in your coven. Organize at least one group social function on your own initiative.
  • Enhance your empathy and learn to respond constructively to the feelings of others. Demonstrate that you can work in harmony and cooperation with others by participating in the group consensus process within your class exercises.

Personal and Community / Environmental Growth (Earth) Requirements:

  • Learn to take care of your physical health through proper diet, exercise, releasing additions, etc. Demonstrate your progress by meeting at least one self set goal aimed towards improving your overall health.
  • Learn and use skills to earn a livelihood and support yourself and your family in reasonable comfort.
  • Perform a cleansing and blessing ceremony in your home, ward it properly, and create a home or personal altar.
  • Learn basic first aid and begin to study a healing technique of your choice (herb craft, message, reiki, etc.)
  • Participate in at least one Community Service project organized by your class.

Spiritual and Religious Growth (Spirit) Requirements:

  • Meet with your mentor at least twice a month to evaluate your progress and set or revise your goals scheduling this meeting is your responsibility.
  • Write at least one Sabbat ritual or one Rite of Passage with the class.
  • Write at least one Sabbat ritual and one Rite of Passage on your own.
  • Lead a guided meditation in a group setting.
  • In partnership with your mentor, lead one Sabbat celebration or Rite of Passage.
  • Write a paper on your own personal religious worldview, beliefs and ethics. Design your own "Credo" and include this in your BoS.
  • Begin a regular practice of meditation and begin to keep a meditation journal and a dream journal.
  • Be willing to take the required oaths.
  • Baring medical concerns, complete a fast and vision quest.
  • Ask for Initiation.
  • Receive the endorsement of the your mentor that you are ready to be initiated into the First Degree.
  • Earn the unanimous agreement of your coven that you live according to the Wiccan Rede, that your participation brings the coven closer to perfect love and perfect trust and that your life in general honors the Lord and the Lady and exemplifies the ideals of Wicca.
  

SECOND DEGREE

Note: In addition to the requirements below, initiates are required to continue their growth in areas begun under their first degree program.

Educational and Mental Growth (Air) Requirements:

  • Complete the First Degree curriculum and assignments. Attend at least 75% of all 1st degree group classes. Complete all assignments associated with the formal classes. Demonstrate your understanding of the material by actively participating in group discussions.
  • Demonstrate your understanding of the material by actively participating in group discussions. Be prepared to take written and/or oral exams to demonstrate your knowledge.
  • Choose a second specialization which interests you and for which you wish to become a resource to the community. Research, write and present an introductory level class on your topic. This is your "second specialization".
  • Do further research on your first specialization and write and present an intermediate level class on your first specialization.
  • Accept an office within the coven and perform its duties to the satisfaction of the Coven Council.
  • Assist in teaching the Wicca 101 and Level 1 series classes. Lead or co-teach at least 3 classes with positive evaluations from your students.

Magickal Growth and Will (Fire) Requirements:

  • Create a new set of defined personal goals and begin working to achieve them. Document your progress in your BoS or personal magickal journal.
  • Continue to add to your BoS until you have at least one ritual for each and Esbat as well as a good collection of Rites of Passage and special purpose spells. Present your BoS to your mentor or teacher for polite critical evaluation when requested to do so.
  • Learn the magickal uses of several additional ritual tools, such as the staff, cauldron, cord, candles, amulets and talismans.
  • Learn to evaluate, cleanse, energize and heal your chakras and energy body.
  • Learn to channel energy strongly and clearly, in both ritual and mundane contexts.
  • Choose a very significant personal goal and achieve it.
  • Organize an important project or event for your coven, motivating and leading others to complete it.
  • Design one year's cycle of Full Moon Esbat using the lunar calendar of your choice (Celtic, Native American, American farmer's almanac, etc.) for both solitary and group use.
  • Demonstrate that you can effectively cast a circle.
  • Lead Esbats and sabbats on regular basis.
  • Continue to design and lead Esbats as required.

  Group Dynamics and Emotional Growth (Water) Requirements:

  • Continue to develop social skills and relationships by continuing to be active in the coven and working together with other people in ritual. Continue to attend at least 75% of Grove functions on an ongoing basis.
  • Continue to take responsibility for your emotions and how you express and transform them. Demonstrate your progress by meeting at least one new self set goal aimed towards improving your overall social skills and psychological well being. Confront and heal or healthfully integrate with at least one of you "dark side" issues related to your pain, anger, hatred or other negative emotions.
  • If you haven't already, begin to explore your own issues from childhood, working with any addictions of substance or process you may be subject to, and finding a means of support for your own psychological health and further growth. This may involve entering therapy, a 12-step growth group, co-counseling, receiving body work, or other group experiences
  • Enhance counseling skills and use them with positive results with a member of your coven or Pagan community.
  • Develpop one system of divination skillfully. Do readings for others within your coven or Pagan community.
  • Continue to maintain warm, positive relationships with others in your coven

Personal and Community / Environmental Growth (Earth) Requirements:

  • Discover and work with an animal ally, familiar or totem spirit.
  • Understand the basics of ecology and learn about the environment in which you live: its geology, plant and animal communities, watershed, weather and more.
  • Spend time in intimate contact with Mother Nature, through hiking, backpacking, gardening, eco-activism, or nature study.
  • Continue your education in healing skills. Be able to lead a beginning class in at least one healing skill.
  • Organize at least one community service project

Spiritual / Religious Growth (Spirit) Requirements:

  • Meet with your mentor at  once each month to evaluate your progress and set or revise your goals.
  • Establish a regular spiritual practice. This can be Tai Chi, exercising, a daily ritual of some kind, establishing a home altar, daily meal blessings, prayers, puja, yoga, or taking care of animals. It should enhance your own state of being, strengthening mind, body, and spirit.
  • Enhance your relationships with your Lower/Younger Self and your Higher/God/dess Self.
  • Develop a special relationship with at least one goddess-aspect and one god-aspect.
  • Assist with at least three Rites of Passage. .
  • Mentor a candidate for first degree initiation.
  • Be willing to take the required oaths.
  • Baring medical concerns, complete a fast and vision quest.
  • Ask for Initiation.
  • Receive the endorsement of the your mentor that you are ready to be initiated into the Second Degree.
  • Earn the unanimous agreement of your coven that you live according to the Wiccan Rede, that your participation brings the coven closer to perfect love and perfect trust and that your life in general honors the Lord and the Lady and exemplifies the ideals of Wicca.
  • In an interview with your mentor, satisfy the coven that you have met all the requirements above

 
THIRD DEGREE
Note: In addition to the requirements below, initiates are required to continue their growth in areas begun under their first and second degree programs.
Educational and Mental Growth (Air) Requirements:
  • Create your own initiation requirements for the third degree. Begin with the minimal group requirements listed below and incorporate your own personal requirements based upon your individual growth needs. Your program should a) meet the goals and purposes of the third degree as stated  b) add to your own personal growth in all 5 elemental areas in a balanced manner and c) incorporate service to the community and concrete ways in which you manifest your Pagan beliefs and values. It is recommended that you use the CAW RINGs program as a guide and review other Wiccan degree programs for ideas on things which would be of value to you. Submit your completed program to your mentor for review and approval. Once your mentor has approved your program, s/he will present it to the circle of 3rd degrees for approval. Once it has been approved by the HPS/HP and circle of 3rd degrees, complete your own program.
  • Choose a third specialization which interests you and for which you wish to become a resource to the community. Research, write and present an introductory level class on your topic.
  • Do further research on your first and second specializations and write and present an advanced class on your first specialization and an intermediate level class on your second specialization.
  • {Complete any areas which need focus or attention in your mental life.}
  • {Demonstrate proficiency in the area of teaching.}

Magickal Growth and Will (Fire) Requirements:

  • Discover and define your True Will.
  • Show that you can channel energy strongly and clearly, in both ritual and mundane contexts.
  • {Complete any areas which need focus or attention in your magickal life.}
  • {Demonstrate proficiency in the magickal arts.}

Group Dynamics and Emotional Growth (Water) Requirements:

  • Confront and heal or healthfully integrate any remaining "dark side" issues related to your pain, anger, hatred or other negative emotions.
  • Learn advanced pastoral counseling skills and be able to use them with positive results.
  • {Complete any areas which need focus or attention in your emotional life.}
  • {Demonstrate proficiency in the areas of group dynamics and counseling.}

Personal and Community / Environmental Growth (Earth) Requirements:

  • Be an example concerning your treatment of Mother Earth. Walk your talk as an environmentalist.
  • See a dedicant right through to initiation 
  • Develop at least one advanced healing skill. Be able to perform healing and teach your healing skill.
  • {Complete any areas which need focus or attention in your personal and financial life.}
  • {Demonstrate proficiency in the area of administration.}

Spiritual / Religious Growth (Spirit) Requirements:

  • Meet with your mentor at least once every two months to evaluate your progress and set or revise your goals.
  • Explain your understanding of your spiritual development and the important spiritual challenges before you now.
  • Explain what legacy you plan to leave when you pass from this incarnation and what you are doing to manifest it. Create and complete a Clergy project focused towards manifesting this legacy.
  • Mentor a candidate for second degree initiation.
  • {Complete any areas which need focus or attention in your religious and spiritual life.}
  • {Demonstrate proficiency in the area of ritual leadership.}
  • Be willing to take the required oaths.
  • Ask for Initiation.
  • Receive the endorsement of the your mentor that you are ready to be initiated into the Third Degree.
  • Earn the unanimous agreement of your coven that you live according to the Wiccan Rede, that your participation brings the coven closer to perfect love and perfect trust and that your life in general honors the Lord and the Lady and exemplifies the ideals of Wicca.
  • In an interview with the your mentor, satisfy the coven that you have met all the requirements above and all of the requirements of your personal initiation program.
